May 2, 2012

Trevor Schongalla '12 was immediately drawn to the exercise science program at Pacific. Four years later, he's bidding a fond farewell and looking forward to getting his personal trainer certification and starting a doctoral program in physical therapy.

The Pacific University exercise science program was a quick-sell for Trevor Schongalla ’12.

The central Oregon-native had long been interested in pursuing a career in the health professions, and specifically in physical therapy.

“I happened to read about exercise science as a field, and it appealed to me on a very basic level,” he said. “It appealed to me at such a high level that I declared my major in my first semester.”

At Pacific, Schongalla has appreciated a high-quality program with excellent faculty support.

“I came in knowing it was a great program and knowing I’d have a powerhouse education,” he said. “I didn’t know I’d have such a good experience.”

He lauds a supportive faculty who run an educational program that forms bonds between students. He noted the intense depth of the final two years of the program, including the opportunity to act as a trainer in the Boxer Boot Camp program and to conduct fitness testing for firefighters in three local departments (a project that also led to his senior project).

He also says he had the opportunity to get out of the classroom both in his field and elsewhere. He is president of the Ultimate Frisbee Club and senior rep for the Exercise Science Club. He also said he’s “dabbled” in other organizations on campus, including the Spanish and international clubs.

“With such a diverse liberal arts school, you get to be friends with people in all shorts of clubs, so you have the chance to participate in a little of everything,” he said.

Schongalla said he hopes to take his personal trainer exams this summer. Then, he’s off to Creighton University in Nebraska this fall, where he was just accepted to the physical therapy doctoral program.

“Pacific has been a great chapter,” he said. “It’s hard to let a chapter like this go.”
