Women's Basketball standout Erica Schultz earns national honor
The senior from Medford is named to the NCAA Division III Team of the Week for a pair of outstanding performances Jan. 6-7.
Pacific women’s basketball player Erica Schultz (Sr., Medford, Ore.) christened the new year with two of her finest performances of the season. One day after being recognized by her conference, Schultz has now earned attention in a national forum.
The D3hoops.com website, the primary source for information on NCAA Division III basketball for over a decade, selected Schultz for its “Team of the Week” based on her performance in Northwest Conference games on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 6-7.
Pacific’s first selection to the D3hoops.com Team Of The Week in over five years, Schultz averaged 29 points, six rebounds, 4.5 steals and 2.5 blocks in the two games, a 72-52 win at Willamette on Friday and 65-55 loss to No. 3-ranked George Fox on Saturday.
“It is a wonderful and well-deserved accomplishment for Erica to be recognized on a national level,” said Pacific head coach Sharon Rissmiller.
“To be named to the weekly D3Hoops.com team is one of the biggest accomplishments a Pacific University women’s basketball player has achieved in a very long time. Not only does Erica represent our program well, she represents the entire Northwest Conference.”
Schultz matched a career-high with 29 points in Saturday’s loss to the unbeaten Bruins. In the second half, Schultz scored 15 consecutive points and accounted for 21 straight points with two assists and another field goal as the Boxers cut a 17-point lead to six.
Since Christmas, Schultz has scored at least 20 points in three consecutive games, leading the Boxers to a pair of wins to extend their record to 9-3, the best start to a season since 1992-93.
The 5-10 forward leads the Boxers in scoring (14.6 points per game) and leads the NWC in steals (3.2 per game), ranking second in blocks (1.4 per game) behind only George Fox’s 6-5 center Hannah Munger (4.7 per game), who is the number two shot blocker in the nation
“I’m proud of Erica for the wonderful contributions she makes as a player,” said Rissmiller, “and as a quality young lady to help our team in its successes.”
The Team of the Week presented by Scoutware is D3hoops.com’s weekly honor roll, in its 15th season of recognizing the top performance at each of the five positions from the previous week. Schultz was one of two forwards selected to the five-person team, along with two guards and a center.
Schultz is a four-year starter at Pacific and led the Boxers in scoring (13.3 points per game) as a junior while earning Second Team All-NWC honors, despite missing the first nine games of the season on a study abroad semester in Spain.
