Speech Team heads to Italy for international tournament
Pacific's Speech & Forensics squad competes in Rome in the midst of a successful 2011-12 season.
Pacific University’s Speech Team continues to roll through its 2011-12 season as it will compete at an International Forensics Association tournament in Rome, Italy March 12-13.
The squad most recently captured first place out of 14 teams in the sweepstakes category at Oregon State University's Earls Wells Memorial Speakeasy Tournament in Corvallis Feb. 25-26.
Individually, the Boxers shined:
- Brianna Castellini '14: Gold Medal Award in International Public Debate (IPDA); Perpetual Trophy; Fourth Place - Impromptu Speaking; Fourth - Poetry Interpretation; Third - Individual Speaking.
- Michael Sproles '15: First Place - Dramatic Interpretation; Fourth - After Dinner Speaking.
- Lilly Huynh '12: First Place - After Dinner Speaking; Second - Prose Interpretation.
- Lindsey McLaughlin '12: First Place - Persuasive Speaking; Third - Prose Interpretation.
- Michael Sproles '15 & Ryan Terao '12: First Place - Dramatic Duo Interpretation.
- Matthew Yasuoka '15: Second Place - Informative Speaking; Second - Impromptu Speaking; Third - Poetry Interpretation.
- Alex Hatch '15: Third Place - After Dinner Speaking.
The Boxers also performed well at a district qualifier on Feb. 24 at Lewis & Clark College in Portland. The tournament was held to determine which competitors would compete at the American Forensics Association (AFA) National Individual Events Tournament to be held April 6-9 in San Marcos, Texas.

- Lindsey McLaughlin: Fifth Place - After Dinner Speaking
- Erin Dozhier: Sixth Place - Prose Interpretation
The Boxers had a busy January, hosting the Hap Hingston Invitational for high school students (Jan. 13-14), as well as the program's signature event: the annual Fred Scheller Invitational (Jan. 27-29), which featured 272 participants from 24 colleges and universities and 760 rounds of competition.
As a team, the Boxers captured third place in individual events, fourth overall and earned a silver medal in the Northwest Forensics Conference (NFC) season sweepstakes.

- John Sproles: First Place - Prose Interpretation; Third in Dramatic Interpretation.
- Lilly Huynh: First Place - Poetry Interpretation.
- Lindsey McLaughlin & Lilly Huynh: Second Place - Dramatic Duo.
- Colton Markham: Second place - International Public Debate.
- Ryan Terao: Third Place - Poetry Interpretation.
- Gustavo Morales & Colton Markham: Third Place - Dramatic Duo.
- Erin Dozhier, Maria Salazar and Alex Hatch also participated in the event.
Pacific's final competition of the fall took place Dec. 3-4 at Clark College's Krista Bacon-Vickrey Memorial Forensics Tournament in Vancouver, Wash. The Boxers finished first among four-year schools, captured 22 individual awards, including eight first-place finishes.

- Colton Markham: Fifth Place - After Dinner Speaking; Fifth - International Public Debate Association (IPDA) Speaker Award.
