Networking to the Top of the Corporate Ladder
Amy Nelson '95 lands success in her career and in an $88 million credit union.
Alumna Amy Nelson ’95 has been climbing the corporate ladder at a rapid pace over the past 15 years and using networking as a tool to reach the top.
Nelson graduated from Pacific University in 1995 with a Bachelor’s Degree in journalism and communications. During her time at Pacific, Nelson was an active member of Student Government, the Pacific Index, and the Alpha Kappa Delta sorority.
Shortly after graduation, Nelson accepted a position at Advantis Credit Union working as their Human Resource Generalist. Nelson spent nine years with Advantis and during her time with the company she learned many valuable lessons about networking.
“Advantis encouraged external networking as a way to accelerate personal career growth, and build relationships to strengthen the organization. This dual-mission networking approach directly contributed to my career move to Point West; and the working relationship our organization has with Advantis today,” said Nelson.
In April 2007, Nelson accepted a job at Point West Credit Union as their Training and Education Manager. Spending only nine months in the position, Nelson proved she was a valuable member of Point West and was offered a handful of promotions over the next two years including Vice President of Corporate Development, Chief of Staff and Chief of Operations Manager.
During her time at Point West, Nelson worked in close partnership with Nick Hodson who was at the time the Chief Financial Officer with Point West. Their partnership proved a success when they were offered interim Co-President/CEO positions with the credit union in 2010.
In an article that was released on the Point West website, Savory said, "Nick and Amy have demonstrated tireless stamina and vision as executive leaders. They've championed unity in our community by pulling together our members, staff and Board during challenging times. With their continued leadership at the helm, Point West Credit Union is poised for even more success."
Success was correct; Nelson and Hodson have worked with their team over the past two years to bring the financial institution out of dark waters during the financial crisis of the economy. Point West Credit Union announced this month that they have met their net worth restoration goals two years early. You can read more about the success of Point West here.
Nelson will present, 'The ART of Networking: Authentic, Relevant Teamwork," a lecture on building your career and your company on meaningful, effective teamwork at the Portland Networking Breakfast on May 23. Click here to learn more and register for the event.
