University empowers Latina girls through educational camps

In partnership with Adelante Mujeres, Pacific's colleges of Arts & Sciences and Education host between 60 and 80 Latina girls to learn about STEM education and good nutrition through summer camps.

Pacific University's colleges of Arts & Sciences and Education are once again partnering with Adelante Mujeres to host a pair of educational camps for Adelante Chicas, group of Washington County-area Latina girls ranging in age from third to 12th grades.

For the past three years, Pacific faculty and staff have helped administer a pair of week-long camps for the girls on the University's Forest Grove campus.

One camp focuses on STEM education (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) and the other on healthy lifestyle practices that include physical activity and good nutrition.

Pacific faculty from various departments lead interactive learning sessions in areas of computer science, mathematics, English and more.

The STEM camp, "Descubirendo! STEM," began on Monday, July 16 and concludes on July 20.

Sixty to 80 Latina girls from throughout Washington County take part in various activities on campus each day from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. with a field trip on Friday to cap the week.

The healthy lifestyles camp, "Tu Vida, Imagen y Salud" takes place July 23-27 at Pacific, also from 9:30 to 3 each day with a field trip on the final day.

A third camp introducing girls to art & culture, "Exprésate!", takes place Aug. 6-10 at Centro Cultural in Cornelius.

Adelante Chicas program director Cecilia Giron said the camps employ fun learning activities to emphasize the importance of science and technology skills, healthy eating and exercising. Campers engage in workshops and group discussions to explore education opportunities in a college setting.

"The camps provide a place for youth to further aspirations of higher education and have a space throughout the summer to learn and share about their culture and history, and to express who they are through art,” Giron said.

Adelante Chicas is a youth development arm of Adelante Mujeres, which provides holistic education, career development and support services for low-income Latina women and their families.

Adelante translates to rise up, move forward, flourish in English. Mujeres means women. Chicas is Spanish for "young women."
