Center for Gender Equity Takes Conference for Boys on the Road

The one-day event gave boys from Lebanon Community Schools a unique glimpse at college life.

Pacific University's Center for Gender Equity recently took its successful conference for boys on the road.

"It's a Guy Thing - Lebanon" enabled 37 boys in sixth through eighth grades within the Lebanon School District to spend a day on the campus of Oregon State University for a taste of college life.

Five male undergraduate students from Pacific's College of Arts & Sciences and five male graduate students from the School of Professional Psychology administered the Oct. 12 event.

The program's purpose is to provide a space for and about boys, to focus on their unique needs and experiences and raise awareness about exciting and empowering opportunities that can lead to successful lives and careers.

The boys enjoyed and valued the opportunity to talk in focused discussion groups with college students about some of the issues and challenges unique to their experiences transitioning to adolescence.

They experienced college life through a panel discussion by the undergraduate students, exploring OSU's Memorial Union, playing football and soccer in the quad, touring the Dixon Recreation Center, visiting Reser Stadium and checking out the bookstore.

This collaboration between CGE, students and Lebanon Community Schools delivered a truly uplifting and liberating service to the community, while developing leadership skills among Pacific students.

Program sponsors included the Center for Gender Equity, SELCO Community Credit Union, Wilbur-Ellis, Rhodes-Warden Insurance Agency, Oregon Dairy Council, Samaritan Lebanon Community Hospital, and Corvallis Fred Meyer.
