FOREST GROVE – Outstanding seasons by freshman outside hitter Marie Rewick (Fr., Honolulu, Hawaii), veteran outside hitter Alexa Block (Sr., Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) and middle blocker Mariah McHolland have earned the trio selection to the 2012 All-Northwest Conference Volleyball Team.  The all-star squad, as selected by the league's coaches, was announced on Tuesday.

Rewick was selected to the second team and was the only freshman named to one of the top two squads.  Alexa was honorable mention for the second straight year while McHolland was named honorable mention for the first time.

All three played a key role in one of the best conference seasons in program history.  Pacific finished the year at 11-13 overall record and third place in the NWC at 10-6, their best finish since 1994.  The 10 conference victories tied the 1981 team for most in school history.

Rewick posted one of the top overall performances for a freshman in program history.  A starter in 23 of the Boxers' 24 matches, Rewick finished ranked third in the NWC with 28 kills and fifth with 3.17 kills per set, leading the Boxers in both categories.  She finished with 10 double-doubles (kills and digs) on the season, topped by a 27-kill, 20-dig performance in a five-set win over then No. 19 ranked Colorado College on Sept. 29.  In addition, Rewick set a single match record for attack attempts in a four-set match with 67 against Linfield on Oct. 24.

“Marie had a great freshman season and was an outstanding all-around player with her hitting, serve receive and floor defense,” said Pacific Head Coach Kip Yoshimura.  “I was excited to see her be the highest freshman vote-getter on the All-NWC Team.  She has an opportunity to be an all-time great at Pacific.”

Block was named to the All-NWC Team for a third time, overcoming a shoulder injury that shortened her junior season to be a critical part of the Boxers' offensive successes.  Block finished ranked fifth in the NWC with 276 kills and seventh with 2.97 kills per set.  She saved one of her best performances of her Pacific career for the end of the season, leading the team with 27 kills in a five-set victory over Whitworth on Nov. 3.  She also posted a 23-kill performance in the match against Colorado College.

“Alexa put a good end on her four-year career at Pacific,” Yoshimura said.  “She had all of the shots at the net and was able to be dominant offensively.  We will miss her.”

McHolland, meanwhile, earned her first all-conference selection after rewriting nearly every blocking mark in the Pacific record book.  The junior broke the 25/30-point era record for blocks with 103 and set all eras records with 87 block assists and 1.10 blocks per set.  She also set the Boxers' single-match record with 12 blocks against Whitworth on Nov. 2.  McHolland finished the season third in the NWC in total blocks and fifth in blocks per set.  She also ranked eighth in the league with a team-high .234 hitting percentage.

McHolland started in all 24 matches for the Boxers and was third on the team with 205 kills and an average of 2.18 kills per set.  She finished with a season-best double-double of 16 kills and 11 blocks at Whitman on Oct. 6.

“When we were able to get Mariah the ball in transition, she was unstoppable,” Yoshimura said.  “As a front row defender, Mariah had an incredible season breaking record and being one of the top middle blockers in the conference.  I can't wait to have her back again as a senior in 2013.”

All three players were involved in a great turnaround that marked Yoshimura's first season as Pacific head coach.  After losing their first seven matches of the season, the Boxers finished season with an 11-6 record.  Eight of their wins came in five sets.
