ENGL 421 The Romantic Period Spring 2013: Revolutionary Romantics (possible time change tba)
One of the most explosively creative periods of British Literature, The Romantic Period of the late 18th and early 19th century transformed our very notions of art and literature. Revolutionary, visionary, and yet often intensely introverted, the Romantic authors redefined our relationship to nature and our understanding of the human imagination. This course will focus on the monumental works of the period, from William Blake’s illustrated epics (see illustration above) to Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, including such iconic masterpieces as Coleridge’s “Kubla Khan,” Keats’ “Ode on a Grecian Urn,” and many others.
