Notes from Under the Oaks

This year I will celebrate Veterans Day in a way I've never done before. I will wake up that morning knowing my younger brother has safely returned to the Unites States, just one week prior, following an eight month deployment in Afghanistan.

The Alpha Zeta Walk is dedicated to the memory of students who lost their lives in WWII, erected 1948.

I’ll also wake up knowing many of our alumni aren’t as lucky and they anxiously await news of loved ones overseas. I’ll wake up Sunday thinking of our alumni who are far from home and looking forward to the chance to speak with their families. I wish all Veterans, active duty service men and women, and their family and friends the very best on this significant day.

Pacific University will acknowledge all Veterans on Monday afternoon, November 12, during our annual Veteran’s Day Celebration at 3:30 p.m. in McCready Hall, Taylor-Meade Performing Arts Center on the Forest Grove Campus. All members of the University community are welcome to attend.

Are you a veteran or currently serving? If so, we’d like to know. Please send us a note at or give us a call at 503-352-2057.

In other news, the Office of Alumni Relations is currently seeking an assistant director to focus on event planning and management. If you know anyone with a background in alumni relations or event planning, please share this posting.

As the chilly weather sets in, we’re looking forward to a winter filled with many chances to connect with alumni. I hope to see all of our Portland-area friends at the Holiday PUB Night with Professor Pauline Beard.

I look forward to hearing from alumni who may nominate classmates for an alumni award before the December 31 deadline.

Also this winter, we’ll be offering alumni an opportunity to participate in discussions around our Internet Strategies, including how we communicate to our current and prospective students and engage our alumni.

In January, we look forward to the annual Forest Grove Student Teacher Alumni Reception and then I’ll be lucky enough to escape the chill for a visit to Hawaii for Island Eyes and the Hawaii Office Grand Opening.

I hope to see you soon, but if not please keep in touch! Send us your stories (including Veteran status) and don’t hesitate to contact us if we can be of assistance.

Best wishes,

Martha Calus-McLain ‘03
Director of Alumni Relations
