University Welcomes Representative from Elizabeth Glaser Pedriatric AIDS Foundation This Week

Makaria Reynolds of the Glaser foundation will share success stories of treating HIV-infected children in Africa and also discuss care options that cross multiple health professions.

Makaria Reynolds of the Elisabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation will speak at two Pacific University campuses this week about working with children with pediatric HIV in southeast Africa.

Reynolds is the foundation’s country support technical officer for Lesotho, Swaziland, Kenya, Ghana, Tanzania and the Congo.

The Elisabeth Glaser Pediatric Aids Foundation is considered to be the leading global nonprofit organization dedicated to preventing pediatric HIV infection and eliminating pediatric AIDS.

On Thursday, Nov. 15, Reynolds will share success stories in treating pediatric HIV patients in Africa. Her discussion takes place at 7:30 p.m. in Marsh Hall's Taylor Auditorium (2043 College Way) and a reception will follow. Admission is free.

On Wednesday, Nov. 14, Reynolds will speak at noon on Pacific's Health Professions Campus in Hillsboro. Her talk will take place in the atrium of Building 2 (190 SE 8th Ave.), and is about current practices for treatment across the health professions. Lunch will be served at this event.

Also speaking will be John Reid-Hresko, assistant professor of sociology and anthropology at Pacific University. Reid-Hresko, who has researched responses to HIV/AIDS transmission in Africa, will address culturally situated ways in which northern Tanzanians understand the dynamics of HIV transmission and how that understanding influences the success of HIV prevention programs.

Both offerings are sponsored by Pacific’s Center for Gender Equity, the Office of International Programs and the Elise Elliot Foundation.
