University Employees are 'Mandatory Reporters' of Child Abuse
New Oregon law deems all university employees 'mandatory reporters' of child abuse.
A new Oregon law makes all employees of an institution of higher education "mandatory reporters" of child abuse.
That means that all employees are required by law to report their concerns if they have a reasonable suspicion or evidence of abuse of a minor.
Child abuse includes intentional physical injury, mental injury, rape, sexual abuse and sexual exploitation of a child under the age of 18.
If you have reasonable cause to believe that a child with whom you have contact has suffered abuse, or a person has abused a child, you must make an oral report (telephone call) to a local law enformcement agency, such as a police department, county sheriff, county juvenile department, Oregon State Police, or to the Oregon Department of Human Services. You will be asked, if possible, to provide the names and addresses for the child's parents or guardian, the child's age, the type and extent of abuse, and any other pertinent information.
The requirement to report child abuse is not limited to working hours — a mandatory reporter must report abuse they suspect or witness at any time.
