Dental Hygiene Students Will Give Kids A Smile on Saturday
The university's School of Dental Health Science and the Washington County Dental Society will team up for their fifth annual Give Kids A Smile Day.
Pacific University's School of Dental Health Science is once again partnering with members of the Washington County Dental Society to provide low-income children with complimentary dental care.
The university's fifth annual "Give Kids A Smile" event takes place at the Hillsboro Campus on Saturday, Feb. 2.
Between 100 and 125 pre-selected children from low-income families in the greater Hillsboro area will receive preventative services such as oral hygiene instruction, routine screenings, teeth cleanings and fluoride treatments, and restorative procedures such as dental fillings and other services.
Last year at Pacific, approximately 80 children received care. This year, an increase in the number of volunteer hygienists and dentists and donations of supplies has allowed the event to accommodate more children.
Pacific's dental hygiene students will work alongside area dental hygienists and dentists who are members of the Washington County Dental Society.
Pacific and WCDS are among approximately 1,700 organizations nationwide that participate in the American Dental Association's national "Give Kids A Smile" program.
The ADA initiative began in 2003 as a way for its members to join with others in the community to provide dental services to underserved children. Each year, approximately 450,000 children around the country benefit because of the efforts of 40,000 or more annual volunteers.
The Pacific School of Dental Health Science's "Give Kids A Smile" day began in 2009. This year's event is made possible by the support of the Art Institute of Portland, International Culinary School, New Seasons Market, Einstein Brothers Bagels, Costco, Starbucks Coffee and Trader Joe's.
