Message from The Dean

This is a message from the Dean in response to an evaluation of our teacher licensure programs conducted by NCTQ, a self-appointed entity that evaluates teacher preparation programs.

Dear Friends of Pacific University’s College of Education,

On Tuesday, June 18, 2013, the National Council on Teacher Quality (NCTQ) will release ratings of teacher education programs across the state and nation. NCTQ, a self-appointed entity, evaluates teacher education programs based on a key-word search of course descriptions and syllabi. As a result of this limited approach, Pacific University’s College of Education, like all of Oregon’s private institutions, chose not to participate in the review process. Nonetheless, we will be included in the report since NCTQ paid our students $25 to $200 to send copies of syllabi and course descriptions to them.   Though NCTQ received very little data they chose to rate some standards and give an overall rating, even though the data was missing or inadequate.

Our College of Education is committed to fulfilling Pacific University’s mission: A diverse and sustainable community dedicated to discovery and excellence in teaching, scholarship, and practice, Pacific University inspires students to think, care, create, and pursue justice in our world. We strive to prepare aspiring and practicing educators to promote and nurture learners’ intellectual, ethical, social, and emotional growth within a learning community committed to equity and diversity. We are committed to continuous improvement, providing quality teacher preparation, and increasing our sphere of influence. Thus, we are pleased to share some highlights of the good and important work that we do.

Our teacher education program is nationally recognized for its quality.

Our curriculum is academically rigorous and our clinical experiences are robust.

Our graduates are skillful and successful

There is a lot to be proud of at Pacific University’s College of Education.  Should you want to discuss any of our initiatives or the results of the NCTQ survey, please feel free to contact me at mankeny@pacificu.edu.

Sincerely,

Mark E. Ankeny,

Dean, College of Education
