Notes From Under the Oaks

In this issue we ask how many jobs have you held since graduation? As I am preparing for my reunion, I am thinking about my path from graduation to a career I love. As is the case for many alumni, there was a time when I was plagued with uncertainty.

In the months shortly after graduation, as I was taking the first steps toward what is now my career, I read a book called Quarterlife Crisis: the Unique Challenge of Life in Your Twenties. I often think about a line from a fellow recent college graduate who was struggling to find his place in the world. He commented something to the effect of, “I don’t know what people do.”

Most college graduates have spent their entire lives in school and haven’t had very much exposure to careers beyond those they see in their daily life or in popular culture.

We need your help. By sharing your story with prospective and current students, you will help widen view for students and recent graduates as they find their place.

Were you someone who arrived on campus as a freshmen and graduated four (or eight) years later with the exact career you intended when you began?

Or did you take a meandering path?

Perhaps you’ve had multiple careers?

Or are you just starting out and facing the same uncertainty described above?

Send us your story! Email. Facebook. LinkedIn. Blog.

You can also share your story with current students in person at Homecoming 2013. We hope you’ll join us and visit with students in person.

Best wishes,
