Anita Mitchell Joins Pacific's Dance Faculty

Pacific University is proud to announce that prestigious ballet teacher, Anita Mitchell will join the Dance department for 2013-2014 to teach ballet courses.

Anita Mitchell began her training with Vinni Frederick and the North Carolina School of the Arts under the direction of Robert Lindgren and Duncan Noble. She also studied with Jillana, Lawrence Rosenburg, Richard Englund, Robert Joffrey and Eugene Loring. In addition, Ms. Mitchell studied modern with Bella Lewitzky and jazz with Luigi and Gus Giordano.

In 1987, Ms. Mitchell earned her master's of fine arts degree from the University of California, Irvine, where she worked closely with Professor Olga Maynard. Ms. Mitchell has performed with regional companies on both east and west coasts, namely the North Carolina School of the Arts, Bristol Concert Ballet and Capistrano Ballet (now Anaheim Ballet). Ms. Mitchell performed frequently at University of California, Irvine, MFA concerts and was a guest artist at California State University, Fullerton, Golden Gate College and Cypress College. She also appeared on MTV in a music video for Z3.

In 1987, she founded the Classical Dance Department of the Orange County High School of the Arts. From 1987 to 1991, Ms. Mitchell was the West Coast Ballet Mistress for the children appearing the Joffrey Ballet’s production of The Nutcracker. Ms. Mitchell was the founding director of Northwest Conservatory of Dance, which she led from 1994 to 2004. She is also Founding Director of Northwest American Ballet and currently teaches ballet at Dance Vision in Oregon City, Ore.

Students trained by Ms. Mitchell have received scholarships from the San Francisco Conservatory of Dance, San Francisco Ballet, Joffrey Ballet, Pacific Northwest Ballet, Houston Ballet, North Carolina School of the Arts, The Rock School, The Harid Conservatory and Idyllwild Arts Academy. They have been accepted into prestigious programs including Juilliard and Royal Winnipeg Ballet. Ms. Mitchell’s students have also performed with the New York City Ballet, American Ballet Theatre, Ballet San Antonio, Pacific Northwest Ballet, the Joffrey Ballet, Rebecca Kelly Ballet, Eugene Ballet, BodyVox, NW Professional Project, Robert Moses’ Kin Dance Company and The Foundry.

Some of Ms. Mitchell’s students have had diverse dance careers from concert to Broadway, including dancing with Celine Dion, Britney Spears, Ricky Martin, Madonna, Paula Abdul and touring with Reba McEntire. One of her former students, Andrea Parson, was recently featured in Dance Magazine (June 2010) On the Rise and was one of six U.S. dancers selected to receive the prestigious 2010 Princess Grace Award.

Ms. Mitchell’s extensive professional relationships ensure a steady influx of workshops and master classes for her students with artists like Summer Lee Rhatigan, Alex Ketley, Christian Burns among others. Anita Mitchell has taught beginning through pre-professional levels of dance for more than thirty years in private studios, pre-professional high school programs and University of California, Irvine, as a graduate Teacher’s Assistant, and between 2000 and 2006 was nominated four times for Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers.
