English Course: The Romantic Period

Course announcement: The Romantic Period British Literature, offered Fall 2014, MW 2:15-3:50

This courses focuses on the British Romantic Period of the late 18th and early 19th century, perhaps the most intensely creative period of British literary history.  Revolutionary, visionary, and yet often fervently introverted, the Romantic period authors redefined our relationship to nature and our understanding of the human imagination. This course will focus on the monumental works of the period, from William Blake’s magnificently hand-illustrated epics (see illustration above) to Mary Shelley’s gothic novel Frankenstein, and Coleridge’s opium-inspired dream vision, “Kubla Khan.”  Other authors covered will include Wordsworth, Byron, Keats, Percy Bysshe Shelley, and Thomas De Quincey.
