Two Pacific University alumni were honored May 17 by the Nobel Peace Laureate Project, a nonprofit grassroots organization based in Eugene. The organization promotes peace by honoring and inspiriting peacemakers.
Rena Dunbar MAT ‘98 and Marty Smith MAT ‘98 were given the project’s 2013-2014 Peace Educator of the Year Award. Dunbar teaches at Spencer Butte Middle School and Smith teaches at Roosevelt Middle School, both in Eugene.
The two educators received the honor at the project’s dinner gala awards celebration held at the University of Oregon Ford Alumni Center. The awards are given to teachers who are exceptionally dedicated, knowledgeable and skilled educators in grades 3 to 12.
The recipients “inspire students of all backgrounds and abilities in the areas of peace education, conflict resolution, multi-cultural understanding and or other relevant topics,” said Roger Durant, director of development for the Nobel Peace Laureate Project.
They also play an active role in the community, as well as have the support and admiration of students, parents and colleagues, he said.
