Josh Masagatani Wins Prestigious Speech Award
At the speech team's most recent tournament, Josh Masagatani is the top speaker and the team earns a second place sweepstakes award.
At the 77th annual Linfield College forensics tournament, junior Josh Masagatani won the Mahaffey Award for the second year in a row. This award is given to the student earning the most points in speech events. Masagatani advanced to the final rounds of all four events that he entered. He was the tournament champion in after-dinner speaking, placed third in informative speaking, was fifth in poetry, and received third place in dramatic duo with partner David Maile. Over 200 students from 25 colleges and universities were competing for the Mahaffey award.
The speech team placed second in team sweepstakes at the tournament. David Brouillette and Jennifer Conner placed second in dramatic duo, with Brouillette also winning third place in dramatic interpretation and Conner placing fifth in informative speaking. David Maile finished in fourth place in after-dinner speaking.
In the junior division of competition, Erin Weninger won impromptu speaking and place third in extemporaneous speaking. In poetry, Casey Nishimura was fourth and Alesha Coleman placed sixth.
The speech team will host the Hap Hingston Invitational, a forensics tournament for high school students, on January 11-12.
