Season High 12 Saves vs. UPS
No. 4 ranked Puget Sound scores two goals in the second half to score a 2-0 shutout over Pacific and claim a share of the NWC women's soccer title
TACOMA, Wash. – Pacific fought through the rain to try and pull off the upset of No. 4 ranked Puget Sound, but in the end the Loggers would not be stopped as they clinched at least a share of the Northwest Conference women’s soccer title in a 2-0 shutout of the Boxers Friday at the East Athletic Field.
Second half goals by Christine Isabella and Theresa Henle gave the Loggers (17-1-0, 14-1-0 NWC) the victory and assured Puget Sound a share of their eighth straight conference title.
The Loggers were right at home on their pitch, outshooting the Boxers 29-4 and allowing Pacific just one shot on goal. Jordan Bodily (So., Eagle, Idaho) led the Boxers with two shots. The Loggers also held a 6-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Pacific goalkeeper Brittany Hartmann (Fr., Portland, Ore.) was kept busy, making a season-high 12 saves in the loss. Puget Sound netminder Kallie Wolfer made just one stop while earning her seventh shutout of the season.
After Pacific (6-10-3, 5-8-2 NWC) held Puget Sound scoreless over the first 15 minutes, the Loggers started scoring just about the time that the rains converged over the pitch. Puget Sound made it a 1-0 game in the 52nd minute when Isabella got up and got a head on a corner kick by Mikaela Freeman and the header found the back of the net. The assist by Freeman gave her 13 for the season, which is just one shy of the school record.
The Loggers made it 2-0 in the 77th minute when Maddy Fisk fed a ball into the box and Janece Levien fed it over to Henle, who turned and fired the ball in for her sixth goal of the season.
Pacific will conclude the 2009 season at home, hosting Willamette on Saturday at 11 a.m. The match can be heard via a live webcast on the Boxer Sports Network.
