Fast Food Nation author Eric Schlosser to give the 2010 Whiteley Distinguished Lecture on Thursday, April 22
Award-winning journalist highlights University's Earth Day events with talk about sustainability and the politics of food
Renowned author and award-winning investigative journalist Eric Schlosser will give Pacific University's 2010 Whiteley Distinguished Lecture, "Sustainability and the Politics of Food," on Earth Day - Thursday, April 22 at 7 p.m. in the Taylor-Meade Performing Arts Center on the Forest Grove campus (Pacific Avenue and Cedar Street).
The event, free and open to the public, is sponsored in part by New Seasons Market and a book-signing session will follow the lecture.
Schlosser authored the critically acclaimed Fast Food Nation: The Dark Side of the All-American Meal (2001), which scrutinizes factors that have compromised the safety and nutrition of food in the fast food restaurant industry. The book is considered by some to be as important to social awareness of consumer safety and labor exploitation as Upton Sinclair's classic novel The Jungle.
Schlosser contributed to the adaptation of Fast Food Nation into a successful motion picture (2002), and also co-produced Food, Inc. (2008), a highly praised documentary critical of corporate farming in the United States. In 2006, he followed up Fast Food Nation with Chew on This: Everything You Don't Want to Know About Fast Food. He also wrote Reefer Madness: Sex, Drugs, and Cheap Labor in the American Black Market (2003) and is working on a book about the nation's prison system.
This Benjamin and Elaine Whiteley Distinguished Lecture is an annual offering of the College of Arts & Sciences made possible by the generous support of the Whiteleys. The College's Social Sciences Division is presenting this year's lecture.
