Areas of expertise and interest include low vision and visual performance standards and measurement. Dr. Smith has a combined 28 years of teaching experience in clinical and didactic work. He served as director of the Washington State School for the Blind for 25 years from 1983 - 2008. Dr. Smith is a Fellow in the American Academy of Optometry.
Dr. Smith is an accomplished woodworker and acknowledged oenophile. He and his wife, Erma, live in Newberg, Oregon, in the log home that he and his family and friends built.
