Senators are elected by a peer vote to represent staff at large and serve a two-year term.
2013-2014 Senators and their terms end dates are:
Staff Senate Chair
Rita Barton (2014)
Rita’s tenure at Pacific University began in 2008 on the School of Pharmacy’s Experiential Team, focusing on graduate student placements in clinical experiences. The past five years brought great opportunities to engage with other Pacific staff and faculty on many committees as well. She enjoys the dynamic, progressive environment and open nature of people at Pacific, within the program and beyond. As a counterbalance to graduate student service, the coursework benefit at the university has provided memorable experiences as an undergraduate student peer. Rita’s route to Oregon traversed New Mexico, Virginia and Michigan. Years of administrative work have been punctuated with creative pursuits in arts-based small businesses. Her favorite pastimes include spending time with her husband and dogs in the Oregon countryside, drumming, live music, writing, and lifelong learning.

Joyce Gabriel (2014)
Joyce began her career with Pacific University in 2000 as the second-ever in-house graphic designer, on a four-person team in what was then the Office of Public Affairs. In 2008, the university embarked on marketing and branding efforts to broaden the recognition and reach of the educational opportunities at Pacific. Since that time, the university has grown exponentially and she now considers herself fortunate to be amongst an 11-member team as creative director in the Office of Marketing & Communications. She’s keen on the collaborative work with campus-wide colleagues and is grateful for all the student workers with whom she interacts. Outside her day job, her passions are found in painting and drawing, along with some gardening, cooking and entertaining friends and relatives. And beyond that, you’ll find her bragging about her husband, Tim Gabriel, metal artist and blacksmith. Though Joyce works in Forest Grove, the couple lives near downtown Hillsboro, just blocks from the Hillsboro campus.

They are outstanding ambassadors for the University.

Over his 28-year tenure at Pacific he has had three different positions which all related to Student Activities and Student Services across campus. Even though he enjoys working with Pacific’s wonderful staff he considers himself a student advocate and has always received gratification in shaping the lives of the young adults as they transition from entering Pacific to graduation. He has been on 50 + committees which has allowed him to observe and comment on the underpinnings of the institution.
In his spare time he enjoys the outdoors with his wife by hiking, biking, skiing and walking. He is also an avid basketball player and Portland Trailblazer supporter. At home he has an extensive music library and relishes in collecting concert posters and Rock and Roll memorabilia.

Eric started working at Pacific University in January 2011 as a Network Administrator within University Information Services. Since then he’s often had the opportunity to work with different areas of the University and has enjoyed the challenges of helping move technology forward and create a positive experience for everyone. While not directly working with students, Eric has appreciated the close-knit feel and friendliness of the University and the ability to get to know others through campus activities and using Pacific Outback resources. Eric and his wife Kristi moved from Wisconsin to Oregon in 2010 and really enjoys being able to spend time outdoors anywhere from the mountains to the coast – even the rain isn’t that bad since the summers easily make up for it!
