Constitution of the Newman Student Association Pacific University
PREAMBLE : The Newman Student Association at Pacific University is designed to enrich the spiritual lives of the students, faculty, staff and the community. The Newman Student Association's focus is Catholic, but membership is open to all interested, regardless of religious affiliation.
ARTICLE 1 – Name : The organization shall be known as “Newman Student Association,” “Newman” or “Newman Club.”
ARTICLE 2 - Purpose : The primary purpose of Newman is to enrich the spiritual lives of the Pacific community through prayer, music, programs, and to foster and nurture interpersonal relationships. Newman's role is for the promotion and support of Catholic identity, but not to the exclusion of other faiths. Spiritual enrichment is understood to include scripture, prayer, retreats, and discussion of faith-related issues, along with opportunities for service to the local parish, the campus and to larger community.
ARTICLE 3 – Membership : Membership is open primarily to those associated with Pacific University , although students attending other area Colleges or Universities are welcome. To be considered a member, an annual updated membership form must be on file (officers also must have a form on file). Members must participate in a minimum of one (1) social event and one (1) community service project and attend a minimum of one half of the scheduled meetings.
ARTICLE 4 - Officers : Newman shall be governed by one or more officers holding the positions of President, Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer. The positions of Activities Coordinator and Web Site Administrator will be appointed by core officers and will then become members of the core group. Core officers must be enrolled as a full-time student at Pacific University . A minimum of one member from the Pacific University faculty or staff shall serve as advisor to the Newman Student Association. In addition, the pastor or an appointed representative of St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Forest Grove will serve as a liaison between the Newman Student Association of Pacific University and the Archdiocese of Portland.
ARTICLE 5 - Duties of Officers: President - Coordinates with club advisor (and vice president, if applicable) in organizing the annual calendar, planning meetings and retreats and arranging guest speakers. May serve as CORE representative to PUCC. Must be a member for at least one year and can serve for a maximum of 2 years. Vice President - Coordinates with club advisor and president in all planning; assumes duties of president in the president's absence. May serve as CORE representative to PUCC. Secretary – Responsible for sending out and compiling membership forms and information, maintaining membership and email lists, notifying club members of events and activities, taking notes at organizational meetings and distributing notes to club members. Treasurer – Responsible for maintaining club funds at the university and the processing of check, petty cash and transfer requests with approval of the club advisor. Coordinates with club advisor in handling funds received from sources other than Pacific University . Funds shall be used for the purpose of retreat registration, social function supplies, club meeting supplies, guest speakers and all other related needs or activities. Advisor – Oversee all club activity and serves as the liaison between the club and university. Would work jointly with the St. Anthony's Catholic Church representative. May serve also as the representative of St. Anthony's Catholic Church if a member of said church. St. Anthony's Representative – Works jointly with club advisor to oversee all club activity. May be youth coordinator or campus minister hired by St. Anthony's Catholic Church. May serve as the advisor if an employee of Pacific University . Activities Coordinator - Works with president, vice president, club advisor and club members in arranging social and community service activities. Web Site Administrator – Maintains information on the Pacific University NSA web site. Coordinates with St. Anthony's Catholic Church and Pacific University to keep current information and links on NSA web site updated.
ARTICLE 6 - Officer Selection : In the event that the club membership exceeds 15 people, an official election will be held annually. Should the club not exceed 15 people, positions will be filled by willing members and with club consent. Voting members must be enrolled as a full-time student at Pacific University as stated in the compliance statement, item #3 in the Pacific University catalog.
ARTICLE 7 - Meetings : It is the intention of the Newman Student Association to hold regularly scheduled meetings twice weekly during the academic year and one (1) retreat per semester. Officers shall meet for organizational purposes one time monthly.
ARTICLE 8 – Constitutional Ratification & Amendments : Constitutional changes will be drafted by the club officers and presented to club membership for approval by a majority vote that will become effective immediately. (Constitution may be subject to approval by PUCC.) |
