Getting Started for HPC Students

What You Need to Know

Welcome to Pacific University! Now that you are here and part of the Pacific family there are many things you will want to know as a graduate student. This brochure covers various topics from computers to commuting. We hope you find it helpful.

Barnes and Noble @ Pacific University

The bookstore is now located at 2032 Pacific Avenue, Forest Grove. The bookstore sells all required textbooks and supplies. In addition, gift items, novelties, magazines, clothing, cards and a wide selection of non-required books are also available.

Barnes and Noble gift cards are accepted. You can contact the bookstore at 503.352.2224 or 503-359-1082. You may also purchase online at http://pacific.bkstore.com/bkstore/content.

Boxer Briefs Professional Programs

Boxer Briefs is a collection of news and events that are either taking place at Pacific University or are sponsored by the University Community. Topics include: internship and job opportunities, shows and event dates, deadlines, scholarship opportunities and much more.
Boxer Briefs can be found in the following formats:

To subscribe to the Boxer Briefs e-mail, go to the Boxer Briefs website and enter in your e-mail address.

Boxer ID Cards

Your Boxer Card is a multifunctional ID card that contains your picture, your ID number, your PUNetID and your name. It serves as your identification card, library card, door access key, and declining balance (if plan allows).

A new feature has been added to your boxer card. It can now serve as a debit and ATM card. You must sign up for a free checking account with US Bank in order to activate the new feature.

The boxer cards have a magnetic strip on the back and a wire embedded in the inside, so if the card is put in the washer, chipped, cracked, or a hole is punched through it, it will no longer work. First card is free, first replacement is $10, second and third replacement is $25. Spouse cards are available for $10.

Boxer cards are made at the Pacific Information Center (PIC). If you have any questions or need help after PIC operation hours, contact CPS at 503-352-2230, off campus and ext. 2230, on campus.

Boxer Online

This resource is used for financial information, registration, and your academic profile. This website is used for:

Calendar and News System (CANS)

CANS is Pacific's primary means of sharing information. All calendar events and news articles along with announcements are entered into CANS and categorized for output through PUNN (primarily for Faculty and Staff), Boxer Briefs (primarily for undergraduates) and Boxer Briefs Professional Programs (primarily for graduates).

Using CANS is an amazing way to know what is happening around campus and within the community. It is also a great way to get involved with Pacific.

Anyone who has a PUNetID and password can log into CANS and add calendar and news events, however, only publishers or writers can approve an item for public output.

How do you use CANS?

News:
Click on the "Add News" link. Fill out the form and click on the appropriate audiences that you want your article to be shared with. Click "Submit Article to CANS" at the bottom of the page. This will send it to the appropriate department for review and then will be posted if approved.

Events:
Click on the "Add Events" link. This will lead you to the main calendar with other events already on it. Find the date you want to put your event on and click the "Add" button. Fill out the form and click on the appropriate audiences that you want your article to be shared with. Click "Submit Article to CANS" at the bottom of the page. This will send it to the appropriate department for review and then will be posted if approved.

Campus Public Safety (CPS)

Campus Public Safety is our security on campus. CPS, along with Tuality Health Care Security on the Hillsboro Campus, monitors the exterior campus including parking lots. CPS also handles parking, deals with crime and non-emergency incidents. If you have any questions or concerns, you may contact the Hillsboro CPS at ext. 7207 or the Forest Grove CPS at ext. 2230.

If there is a non-emergency, please call CPS at 503-352-7207 (non-campus phone). In an emergency call 9-1-1 and then contact CPS so they are aware that you made the call for the emergency.

Commuting to Pacific

Tri-Met:
Pacific offers Tri-Met passes to assist your travel. A standard Tri-Met pass for a four month pass is $248, a student pass is $143. You can use Tri-Met's website, which is http://trimet.org/, for their Trip Planner to plan your commute by bus and MAX.

Discounted Student Pass:

Park and Ride:
There are Park and Ride facilities all along the MAX line. Consult the MAX Light Rail System Map on Tri-Met web site. All have a 24 hour parking limit and bike lockers. Downtown Hillsboro parking lots are available for park and ride commuting. Consult the HPC Parking Map.

Bicycles:
There are bicycle parking spaces provided on the Hillsboro campus. Secure storage is available if needed and a bike lock is strongly reccomended. There are various bicycle spaces on the main campus as well.

Parking Permits:
Carpooling and public transportation is strongly encouraged for the Health Professions Campus. Vehicle commuting is not recommended. Parking is very limited and restricted by City Ordinance in the residential neighborhoods surrounding the campus. There are free public parking lots in Downtown Hillsboro, but they are not reserved for Pacific students.

Parking permits are mandatory if you will be parking on either the main campus or the Health Profession Campus. Forms can be downloaded from the CPS website or can be found at the PIC.

There is a $40 fee and is billed to the student account. It is valid for one calendar year; January to January. When parking on the street there is no parking permit required. However, street parking is done by the City of Hillsboro, not CPS, and is very limited. Tuality Hospital has a parking garage next to the campus. If you park in any Tuality controlled parking, you will be ticketed.

Shuttle Bus:
The shuttle is free to all Pacific University students, faculty and staff. Before boarding the shuttle bus, individuals must show a current Boxer Card to the driver. The shuttle bus route is from the Pacific University Campus in Forest Grove to the Shuttle Stop to the College of Health Professions and the reverse on the return.

The shuttle schedule is posted online at: http://www.pacificu.edu/hpc/commuting.cfm

E-Classifieds

E-Classifieds is a resource that students and people around the area can buy, sell, or trade items. You can create an account from the website, which is http://classifieds.pacificu.edu/, to post items you want to sell or buy.

When posting an ad, it will be sent for approval before being available for the public to view.

The are numerous categories and more being added each day. If you have comments or suggestions please e-mail Denise Giesbers at dgiesbers@pacificu.edu.

E-mail

MyMail:
MyMail is a link that is accessible from Pacific's website that houses your e-mail account. You must first activate and change your password through MyAccount (see the PUNetID and Password section of this book for more information). You must login with your PUNetID and your password in order to access your MyMail account.

Your e-mail address by default is your PUNetID, yourPUNetID@pacificu.edu. If you do not want your PUnetID as your e-mail address for whatever reason, you can create an alias for yourself, a new name which can be used in place of your PUNetID. It is important to note that this will not change your PUNetID and you must still use your PUNetID to login to most systems. To create an alias you must logon to MyAccount and click on "Change your e-mail address." This will create the alias although when you login to MyMail you will still use your PUNETID.

BoxerMail Powered by Google:
BoxerMail is new to the campus and more information will be forthcoming as UIS transitions to this service. We feel it is important for you to know that this will be coming shortly and you will be the first individuals to take advantage of the new system. Until you are notified, continue to use MyMail. There are many benefits to moving to BoxerMail: 2GB of space, a Calendar for personal use, and the ability to keep your account once you have graduated Pacific are just a few.

Once you have been notified that the system is up and running, please use the following information to aid you in the transition process.

1. Login to MyAccount and follow the link that will transition your MyMail account to the new BoxerMail account.
2. As you work through the screens under MyAccount to transition to BoxerMail, one of the screens will give you a temporary, BoxerMail only, password. This is different for each person and generated by Google not Pacific. Make sure to write it down and put it in a safe location until you change it on BoxerMail.
3. Go the Pacific BoxerMail website and login using your temporary password. http://mail.boxers.pacificu.edu
4. Once logged in, change your temporary password to a permanent password. This can be the same password that you use for your PUNETID but they are powered by different generators and for all due purposes are different.
5. At this time everything that is in your MyMail account will be transferred to your BoxerMail account.

It is important to remember that information can sometimes be lost. If you have information and emails that you do not want to lose for any reason it is always better to print them and keep them in a safe location and/or download them to your computer or USB drive.

Remember that MyMail is the only system that will be changing and those such as MyAccount and Boxer Online may have additional screens and information added but will not change processes. It is also important to remember that BoxerMail is powered by Google and seperate from the University, therefore your passwords are thru seperate entities.

BoxerMail website is http://mail.boxers.pacificu.edu. You will also be able to list your e-mail account at PUNETID or alias@pacificu.edu or PUNETID or Alias@boxers.pacificu.edu.

More information regarding MyMail and the BoxerMail can be addressed thru the UIS helpdesk at the following: 503-352-3132 or e-mail help@pacificu.edu.
