Introduction & Purpose
In 1999, Pacific University's Professional Programs Council (PPC) allotted a portion of its annual budget to provide financial assistance to graduate students working on research and thesis projects. Today, the research fund awards up to eight (8) grants each academic year at an amount of $200 for each grant, and students from all of Pacific University's professional programs are eligible to apply for research funding.
Research grants are awarded to students who are able to demonstrate how the results of their research project will have applicability for participants in one or more of the other professional programs at Pacific University, or have applicability to the undergraduate community. Consequently, PPC grants serve a dual purpose: provide financial assistance to professional program students and contribute significantly and uniquely to the learning opportunities provided by our University.
Criteria for Selection
Applications for funding through a research grant from PPC must clearly demonstrate the following:
- The applicant(s) are working on the final research requirements for their respective program.
- How the results of the research project or thesis can be applicable for participants in one or more of the other professional programs at Pacific University (eg. students in the School of Physical Therapy explored whether the use of colored lenses had an impact on the movement capabilities of patients with Parkinson's Disease and shared their results with students in the College of Optometry), OR
- How the results of the research project or thesis can be relevant to members of the undergraduate community at Pacific University (eg. a student in the School of Professional Psychology studied whether exposure to violence in television news programs produced an autonomic stress response and wrote an article for the Pacific University Index to educate graduate and undergraduate students on the effects that stress can have on an individual), OR
- How the research project or thesis establishes a working relationship with the surrounding community that will provide additional research opportunities for future graduate students from multiple professional programs, AND
- The presentation of the results of the research project or thesis to the Pacific University or surrounding community must be above and beyond the current program requirements for dissemination of research.
