School of Pharmacy Assistant Professor Marina Suzuki Publishes Article On Drug Metabolism

School of Pharmacy Assistant Professor Dr. Marina Suzuki has recently published an article on a novel grapefruit juice which might be safely consumed with medications. The article, entitled “Effect of Low Furanocoumarin Hybrid Grapefruit Juice Consumption on Midazolam Pharmacokinetics,” reports on the result of a clinical study conducted with interprofessional collaboration. This study evaluated the pharmacokinetics of midazolam, a drug used as a probe to measure in vivo activity of CYP3A, a major drug-metabolizing enzyme in humans, after administration of water, regular grapefruit juice, and the novel hybrid grapefruit juice. The study showed that the novel hybrid grapefruit juice did not affect the activity of CYP3A as clinicians and patients may commonly be concerned with the use of regular grapefruit juice. An abstract of the article can be accessed online via PubMed.
