The Northwest Conference is seeking applicants for the position of Assistant Commissioner.  The Northwest Conference is an NCAA Division III conference composed of nine member institutions in the states of Oregon and Washington, along with one affiliate member in California. The position will be located on the Hillsboro campus of Pacific University in Oregon.  The position is full-time, 12 months, and will report directly to the NWC Commissioner.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Assistant Commissioner will be involved in all aspects of the conference’s day-to-day operations and administration of publicity, brand initiatives, compliance and championships for the 20-sport conference.

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Develop and administer effective strategies for promoting the competitive success and academic reputation of conference members.
  • Assist in the development of the Northwest Conference brand and strategic plan.
  • Manage all publicity for the NWC utilizing the conference website and social media platforms.
  • Support the conference members’ publicity initiatives, utilizing industry standard methods and best practices for NCAA Division III conferences.
  • Primary liaison with conference Sports Information Directors.
  • Serve as conference liaison for assigned sport committees.
  • Coordinate and oversee championship operations between the host and the NWC Office.
  • Manage the conference award program.
  • Represent the NWC at conference meetings, media events, national championships and events.

SECONDARY FUNCTIONS:  Perform other related duties as assigned.

JOB SCOPE:  Performs duties independently with minimal supervision, operating from specific and definite directions and instructions.  Attention to details is a must.

SUPERVISOR RESPONSIBILITY:  Oversee Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC).

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor’s degree is required.
  • Graduate degree is preferred.
  • Minimum of 2 to 3 years of experience in a conference office, athletics administration, marketing or event management is preferred.

  • Demonstrates confidentiality regarding information pertaining to all students, faculty and staff.
  • Maintains proper appearance and personal conduct for the employee’s particular job.
  • Uses effective communication skills taking into consideration body language, filters, listening, paraphrasing, and questions with customers of diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds.
  • Demonstrates ability to work in a team environment.
  • Take responsibility for maintaining current knowledge of university information, activities, safety and emergency procedures and plans
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • A demonstrated knowledge of NCAA Division III and Northwest Conference rules.
  • Manage multiple projects with tight deadlines.
  • A working knowledge of Microsoft Office, social media platforms, Adobe Creative Suite, Stat Crew, and website content management software is a must.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Travel required and must possess a valid drivers license.
  • Some night and weekend work is required.

NORTHWEST CONFERENCE

The Northwest Conference was formed in 1926, making it one of the oldest athletics conferences in the western United States. The NWC move to NCAA Division III in 1996 was embraced as one that would foster equity, sportsmanship and genuine concern for the student-athlete in all endeavors of competition.   The conference’s current membership includes Lewis & Clark College, Linfield College, George Fox University, Pacific University (Ore.), and Willamette University from Oregon; Pacific Lutheran University, the University of Puget Sound, Whitman College, and Whitworth University from Washington; and affiliate member Mills College from California.  Over the last 22 years, the Northwest Conference has won nine NCAA Division III National Championships and is competitive on a national level in a wide array of sports and as well as recognized for its emphasis on academic excellence. 

SALARY & BENEFITSThe salary is $47,000 and an excellent benefits package is provided.
