Construction is Underway at Pacific Hall

Construction at Pacific Hall is officially underway! Walsh Construction, Dixon Demolition, and PMG abatement contractors will be working onsite during the next few weeks to complete most of the demolition and abatement work.

Construction Activities Week of May 30

The construction fence was erected around Pacific Hall. At this time, Pacific Hall, the fire lane immediately north of the building, and the walkway east of the building between Pacific Hall and Trombley Square are closed for campus use. Access to the area inside the construction fence is limited to project personnel, and PPE is required for anyone entering inside the fence.

Walsh will create their laydown and staging area for storage of tools, materials, equipment, and vehicles on the lawn west of the building immediately south of the fire lane. They will be laying down rock in this area. This work will involve the presence of dump trucks, construction vehicles, and equipment, which will create dust and noise impacts, particularly to the buildings immediately north of the fire lane (Bates House, Walter Hall and Annex). Walsh will spray water during laydown to mitigate the amount of dust. Over the next few days, Walsh will continue to bring in construction equipment, connexes for storage, and begin staging materials. There will be noise impacts associated with this work.

Dixon Demolition began selective demolition of interior spaces on the second floor, which will continue throughout the week. This work may produce some noise impacts to surrounding buildings, however the dust and noise should be mostly contained within Pacific Hall. There will be some noise associated with construction vehicles used to remove and dispose of demolished materials. Within the next week or two, they will begin removing windows on the second floor. Second floor rough openings will be covered upon removal with plastic to contain dust and seal the space from moisture.

PMG Abatement Contractors are abating the hazardous materials in the building. This week, they will focus on the main entrance and first floor lobby. Once this area is abated, they will move around the perimeter of the first floor before moving upstairs. Each day, PMG will have a box truck parked inside the fence in front of the main entry for the loading/unloading of equipment, and the disposal of hazardous materials at the end of each day. There may be some noise impacts associated with this work.

Move Transition

The movers completed the bulk of the move last Friday, May 26. Some furniture remaining in the building, particularly ancillary furniture like chairs and other small items will be collected by Facilities and moved to storage connexes in the laydown area. Walsh will rent the connexes for the duration of the project, and equipment stored will be moved back in at the completion of construction. Remaining large furniture will be draped and protected for the course of construction. When necessary, this equipment will be moved within the spaces to allow the construction team access to the ceilings to install fire sprinklers.

There are still a handful of UIS items and university technology remaining in the building. Any wall-mounted technology to remain will be wrapped and protected, and UIS will move through the spaces this week to remove or relocate any remaining electronics that are at risk of damage from dust or vibration.
