"I Can Share with Them My Piece of the World"

Rachelle Mejia MAT ’07 always knew she wanted to be a teacher.

The Pacific University alumna teaches the Sharks, one of two preschool classes at the Pacific University Early Learning Community on the Forest Grove Campus.

The ELC, Mejia says, provides a tremendous learning opportunity for teaching candidates in the College of Education and exposes young children to lifelong learning, starting with a play-based early childhood curriculum and environment.

“My favorite part of teaching here is I have the freedom to do what I love and share what I’m interested in,” she said. “I can come and cook, and I know that activity is valid, but I don’t necessarily have a test tell me later that these are the skills that they gained. Because I can see that.

“I can share with them my piece of the world and things that I love, and learn back from them and become a better teacher because of it.”
