Pharmacy Student Tahmeena Raheel Receives National Public Health Award

The School of Pharmacy congratulates second-year student Tahmeena Raheel for receiving the prestigious 2018 United States Public Health Service (USPHS) Excellence in Public Health Pharmacy Award. Tahmeena’s community services and her dedication to public health is outstanding.

Tahmeena is a firm believer that women can play a vital role in public health at their villages in Afghanistan and has helped women in Afghanistan to promote public health.

Since she joined our School, Tahmeena has not only been a tireless leader and advocate for public health by organizing and providing different community services in Oregon. A few to name here are:

  • “Operation Diabetes: Ramadan Tent Project,” where she invited Muslims from different communities and educated diabetes patients about how to manage their blood glucose levels while fasting
  • “Portland Women’s Expo Fred Meyer,” where she and her team participated in conducted blood glucose screenings and diabetes education for over 400 individuals at the Oregon Convention Center, Portland
  • “Operation Diabetes Costco Aloha,” where she and her team screened and educated over 90 individuals for diabetes.
  • "Oregon Summer Special Olympics Health Fair," where she provided information to athletes about the services and resources available for athletes.
  • “Interprofessional Diabetes Health Fair” in Hillsboro, where she organized a series of activities and invited students from other health professions programs (Dental Hygiene Study, Physician Assistant Study, Optometry, and Psychology) to provide health screenings and education to visited patients.
  • “Operation Immunization” events, where she assisted public with forms and instructions on the process of receiving vaccinations, recruited patients, and provided information about flu and its consequences to individuals and to the community.

This is great news for all of us. For the second time in a row, our students are recognized for their commitment to public health at the national and federal levels.
