Who can be a preceptor?

Certified physician assistants, physicians, and other licensed health care providers who are qualified in their area of instruction can be preceptors. Preceptors may co-mentor with other providers at their site.

What does a preceptor do?

Preceptors supervise, mentor, observe, and provide feedback for PA students as they further develop their clinical reasoning and technical skills.

Pacific PA students can...

  • Take a history
  • Perform a physical examination
  • Assess common medical problems
  • Develop a differential DX and TX plan
  • Perform diverse technical skills
  • Counsel patients
  • Accurately record and report progress notes and orders
  • Communicate effectively
  • Assist in surgery
  • Evaluate and manage emergencies
  • Function as part of the healthcare team

Preceptor Opportunities

Four-week and Six-week rotations are available in:

  • Family Medicine (Each student completes two Family Medicine rotations): A family practice medical office that includes the care of adults, women and children.
  • Internal Medicine: An internal medicine practice in an outpatient setting.•Inpatient Medicine: An inpatient setting to include hospitalist/specialties.
  • Surgery: A surgical setting with pre, intra, and post-operative learning opportunities.
  • Emergency Medicine: An emergency department or trauma care unit.
  • Primary Care Elective 1 & 2: Diverse settings, including primary care, specialties, community medicine,public health, or international/global health

Our Students Travel

As a travel program, our Clinical Phase students receive a diverse exposure to clinical sites in different locations with multiple mentors throughout the United States and internationally.
