Pharmacy Summer Undergraduate Research Opportunities

Pacific University School of Pharmacy is pleased to offer two competitive Summer Research Awards to undergraduate students. Each award offers a ten-week research experience at the School of Pharmacy research laboratory. Eligible students may apply to either our summer undergraduate research fellowship (SURF) program from the American Society for Experimental Therapeutics (ASPET) or to work on one of two National Institutes of Health (NIH) grants.

Learn more about the SURF award.

Individual NIH research assistantships are available with Drs. Elbarbry or Roberts. More information on these are in their faculty profiles.

These awards are ideal for undergraduate students - at any level - that are interested in pharmaceutical research and pharmacy school. Undergraduate students will be paired with a faculty mentor, participate in ongoing research, and work alongside graduate students. In addition to hands-on research, students will be involved in research seminars, elevator pitch competitions, and social events. The summer research project can be continued throughout the school year and/or build the foundation for a senior capstone project. Students that apply and are accepted to pharmacy school have the opportunity to continue with their research during pharmacy school through research electives, a research track, or Master of Science in Pharmaceutical Sciences program. Summer research will typically be performed between June and July, although some flexibility with an earlier or later start date is possible. Accepted students are expected to spend between 20-40 hours per week during the ten-week summer research training program. Students will be paid a stipend of up to $4,600 total for laboratory work. Students are responsible for housing and transportation during the summer research period.

Instructions for applying are provided below. Interested students are asked to rank up to four faculty as potential mentors. Note that the Summer Research Award program is competitive and applicants are encouraged to reach out to participating faculty by email or phone prior to completing an application.

Applications should be submitted before April 1st.
