Program Information

Centrally located in the heart of Eastern Baden Württemberg, Aalen, with a population of 67,000, is the gateway to the Swabian Jurassic Geological region, and only one hour’s drive from the state capital Stuttgart. Founded in 1240, Aalen has a rich history exemplified by the compact and charming Old Town. It is located at the heart of a major recreational region and is surrounded by picturesque hillsides amidst dense forest. Situated at the heart of the European Union, Baden-Württemberg is an economic power house, that boasts one quarter of Germany’s research and development capacity. Porsche, Bosch, Daimler Chrysler, and Carl Zeiss Optik are examples of the major international companies headquartered in the region.

Founded in 1963 as a state engineering school and transformed into a university of applied sciences in 1971, Aalen University currently hosts 4,000 students. Ten percent of the overall student population are international, representing more than 50 different countries. Aalen University is a modern university marked by academic excellence in both teaching and research. The School of Management and Business Sciences, where students will study, is known for its strong partnerships and its joint collaborations with industries in the region. Aalen University provides excellent support services for its international students, including its Buddy Program, which will facilitate integration by linking up each incoming exchange student with a local student for the duration of the study program.


Students will begin their program with a 4-5 week orientation program which will combine an intensive credit-bearing German Language Preparatory Class with various excursions and activities that will provide a comprehensive introduction to the town, region and its culture. Following the orientation program students will enroll in courses taught in English offered by the School of Management and Business Sciences.

Housing and Meals

Students will be housed in residence halls on or close to the main campus of Aalen University. All accommodations include single rooms, and some apartment-style accommodations may also be available. Many exchange students are housed at the Carl-Schneider Studentwohnheim, a large high-rise residence hall with excellent facilities. Meals are self-catered. Students will be responsible for payment of housing fees directly to Aalen University. Please note that all semester housing contracts are for a fixed six-month period.

Academic Calendar

Aalen University operates on a standard German academic calendar, with Winter Semester running September-late February, and Summer Semester from March until late-July. Therefore, for students planning just a single semester of study in Aalen, Spring Semester will be the only feasible option.
