Environmental Studies: Policy, Culture, & Society | Academic Advising Handbook

Environmental Studies in Policy, Culture and Society (PCS) offers students an interdisciplinary curriculum and a disciplinary approach towards understanding complexities of the human relationship to the environment. It should be of particular value to students who are interested in pursuing careers in environmental law, environmental policy, environmental non-profits, or environmental design. Students should be aware that they will need, by the end of their sophomore year, to choose a disciplinary emphasis in which a senior thesis will be completed.

First-year students are advised to take ENV 200, Introduction to Environmental Science, the only required course for all students in the major. Prior to establishing a disciplinary focus, students are required to take core courses in the natural sciences, the social sciences, and humanities. Courses suitable for first-year students include:

  • ENV 141 Permaculture Design
  • ENV 160 Energy and the Environment
  • ENV 210 Tropical Environmental Biology
  • ENV 224 Environmental Politics (cross-listed as POLS 224)
  • ENG 222 Environmental Literature
  • ARTST 107 Systems Thinking for Problem Solvers
  • ARTST 207 Design for Sustainability
  • ARTST 122 Studio I CE: The Creative Process
