January Residencies | Master of Fine Arts in Writing
The January residency takes place in the town of Seaside on the Oregon Coast. It begins the semester that runs from January to May. Following a series of virtual residencies organized because of ongoing concerns due to COVID-19, we're very pleased to return to our traditional in-person gathering in January 2022.
About Seaside, Oregon
Seaside is a charming resort town that in the off season has a solitude that writers enjoy. Winter weather on the coast changes by the hour, and many visitors come to see the dramatic storms that roll in off the ocean. But there is also a chance to see mild and even balmy weather on the beach. Coastal Oregon temperatures generally are warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer than the temperatures in Portland.
Travel and Accommodations
Seaside is approximately two-and-one-half hours by car from the Portland Airport, depending on the weather. Students can take a bus from Portland to Seaside through AMTRAK or catch a Pacific contract shuttle from the airport.
Students and faculty stay at several hotels in Seaside, including the Best Western Ocean View Resort, a pleasant beach-front hotel next to the boardwalk. Many of the rooms have views and all have high-speed Internet, a small refrigerator and a microwave. For those who like to swim or soak, the Best Western offers an indoor pool and Jacuzzi to use after bonfires on the beach. A library, restaurants and shops are within easy walking distance, and many wonderful towns are within a short drive, including Cannon Beach and Gearhart.
The winter residency includes an informal graduation celebration for those students completing their degree requirements in January. Friends and family of graduates are invited to attend the celebration and all graduating students are encouraged to return to the campus in June to walk in the formal ceremony.
January Residency Dates
The next winter residency is scheduled for January 6-16, 2022.
