Deferring Enrollment | Fall 2020

For undergraduate students whose circumstances prevent them from joining us for Fall 2020 on campus or through remote learning, deferring admission to Spring 2021 may be an option.

Deferring Your Admission to Pacific University

In order to request to defer enrollment to Pacific, students must:

  • Submit the $400 non-refundable enrollment deposit, signifying the student's intent to matriculate.
  • Complete the Request to Defer Form on the applicant status page by July 1, 2020.

Terms for Approved Deferrals

  • The student is required to reply to Pacific's offer of admission by submitting a $400 non-refundable deposit to hold their place in the future class by June 15, 2020.
  • The student may not submit deferral deposits or hold spaces at any other institutions.
  • The student must notify all other colleges to which they have gained admission of their decision to enroll at Pacific.
  • The student may not matriculate and/or enroll on a full-time basis at another college or university during the deferral period. However, students may take limited coursework to maintain academic focus.
  • For 2020-2021, deferrals will be granted for first-year and incoming transfer students to enroll in the spring semester (January 2021) OR fall semester (August 2021).
  • Should the student choose to apply for admission to other colleges or universities during the deferral period, they will forfeit the deposit paid to Pacific and must contact Pacific to officially close their application.
  • Students granted a one-semester deferment will be sent instructions in October and must reconfirm their intention to enroll by Nov. 20, 2020. For Fall 2021 semester enrollment, the student is required to reconfirm their intention to enroll no later than Jan. 1, 2021. Instructions on how to reconfirm will be sent via email in December.

After a Deferral Request Has Been Approved

We will routinely approve requests, provided you satisfy the requirements listed above within two weeks of the date the request was submitted.

Once a request for deferral has been approved, the student will be notified via email that their application status has been updated.

Deferring Financial Aid

Students choosing to enter Spring 2021 will receive the spring portion of their existing financial aid package, including merit scholarships and need-based financial aid.

Financial Aid packages, including merit scholarships and need-based institutional, state and federal financial aid will not be deferred for students who do not enroll during the 2020-2021 academic year.

  • Students must reapply for need-based financial aid by submitting the 2021-2022 FAFSA as soon after Oct. 1, 2020 as possible.
  • Students may apply for Talent Awards after Oct. 1, 2020.
  • Academic scholarships will be determined based on the criteria set for the entering Class of 2021.

We realize that these are difficult decisions and that you are facing these decisions in a time of great uncertainty. You do not have to make these decisions alone. Of course, we would like to see you at Pacific in the fall, but more importantly we want what is best for you. Call your Admissions Counselor today to discuss your options.
