Our Community

Pacific University was the first chartered university in Oregon and today is a thriving member of the education scene in the Willamette Valley. The majority of our undergraduates live and study on our original Forest Grove Campus. However, we also offer undergraduate teacher preparations programs on our Eugene and Woodburn campuses. Undergraduates studying dental hygiene attend the Hillsboro Campus, where the online bachelor of health science program also is based.

About Forest Grove

Forest Grove is a suburb of about 22,000, about 25 miles west of downtown Portland. Nestled in wine country at the foothills of the Oregon Coast Range, Forest Grove is the perfect place to make your college home. Check out a map of campus (pdf).

The City of Forest Grove offers a downtown shopping district with a variety of restaurants and quirky shops. A weekly Farmer’s Market provides live entertainment, community engagement and fresh produce May through October. Local activities, like the fall Corn Roast and Sidewalk Chalk Art Festival, spill onto campus and strike student interest. The town also offers a discount movie theater, live community theater, a billiards hall just off campus, and a nearby disc golf course.

Students also enjoy connecting their classes to the community through a variety of volunteer opportunities with local nonprofits, schools and other organizations.

Exploring the Outdoors

Oregon is home to all kinds of outdoor adventures, and Forest Grove is a great home base for your exploration. We’re a bike friendly community in the center of a system of rural and urban bike trails that runs throughout Washington County. There’s hiking, camping and fishing nearby at LL Stub Stewart State Park and throughout the Tillamook Forest. Forest Grove is just an hour from the Oregon Coast or Mt. Hood. You can explore on your own, or the Pacific University Outdoor Pursuits can hook you up with gear and guides for everything from surfing to canoeing to snowboarding.

City Life

Forest Grove is a pretty quiet town, so you don’t have to worry about getting distracted from your studies. But when you’re ready to play, head into Portland for clubs, concerts, shopping and so much more. Forest Grove is on the edge of the greater Portland Metro Area, so you’re close to the vast amenities of Hillsboro and Beaverton and just 25 miles from the heart of downtown.

Getting Around

Forest Grove is a two-wheel sort of place. Bring your own wheels, or rent a bike from the Outdoor Pursuits for a day, semester or year to get around town.

Need to make a shopping trip? Check out our on-campus car sharing program by ZipCar. You can check out one of our shared autos for as little as an hour or for a few days, as needed.

The Portland area’s mass transit system, TriMet, also connects campus to the metro area. There’s a bus stop just a couple blocks away that connects students to the light-rail system that runs throughout the region.
