CANS Update

What happens to CANS content in development of new university website?

Over the next several months we are building our new university website. As a part of the launch of our new website, we will phase out the use of CANS (which isn't compatable with the new website software).

CANS will be replaced with multiple tools, including the new EMS (Event Management Software) as well as functionality within our new CMS (Content Management System), which we will use to manage our new website. More to come on when we will start using new tools, including our CMS which will be used when we launch the new website.

History
We began using CANS in 2004, as a communication tool used for calendar listings, news feeds, webpage content and eNewsletters and there are now more than 24,000 posts.

Next Steps
We will maintain this database (which works in tandem with webpages) for a period of time.

In addition, we will export all of the data. The Excel export will not provide clean externally facing copy (as it will export with HTML code mixed into the copy). It can, however, be useful if there is content we would like to retain.

Also, we are exporting the last three years of content, identifying content we believe will be needed in some form or fashion, on our current website, inVvault or in archive. There are currently around 2,500 posts in that time frame.

Your Content
If you have a specific interest in maintaining content that you have published in CANS we would be happy to provide you with an export (these are somewhat customizable).

If that content needs to live on our new website, you will have an opportunity to create pages for that content.

To note, this is a manual process, and you would need to be part of that process.

Happy to answer any questions. And, as noted, we are retaining this content for a period of time. The entire database will be archived. So, we will be able to access and provide. If you have questions, or you are interested in retaining specific information, please contact me.

New Website and ENewsletters
Our new website will have newsfeeds on pages targeted to current undergraduate students, current graduate and professional students and faculty and staff (as well as other areas of the site). This may be useful in considering how content currently provided in eNewsletter format (e.g. Boxer Briefs and PUNN) could be provided in the future.

Much appreciated,
