Through innovative and engaging classes, the economics program at Pacific University leads students to explore society’s management of the scarce land, buildings, equipment, and other tools on hand to produce goods and services; the natural environment critical to human well-being; and the knowledge of how to use available resources to promote human happiness.
Many issues in the news headlines and personal decisions involve economic questions. The study of economics leads to a better understanding of the world in which we live and to a greater ability to make decisions, both large and small. Addressing economic problems successfully requires skills that span many areas of learning. The undergraduate major in economics develops skills in three critical areas: logical thought used in solving problems, observation and inference from data, and presenting ideas in compelling writing and speech.
Graduates with majors in economics find work in many professional fields, and are always high in demand. The value of skilled economic analysts to businesses and other employers results in high starting salaries and ample job opportunities for economics majors. While various roles in businesses are most common, economics majors make successful careers in law, medicine, government and non-profit organizations, and international relations, as well as in academic roles.
