Study Abroad in London, England

Program Information

Pacific University's London Program at London South Bank University (LSBU) offers students the opportunity to study in Western Europe's most culturally diverse and vibrant capital. London offers a rich historical heritage, world-class theatre, superb museums and art galleries, and easy access to many major European cities. Students can participate for one semester or for a full academic year.

LSBU, with an enrollment of 19,000 students drawn from over 130 countries, is on the doorstep of Central London. The campus is located by the Elephant and Castle underground station, three stops from the Waterloo main line strain station.  The university buildings are modern and well-equipped.  A key point of distinctiveness is LSBU’s multicultural character - with 52% of its students classified as “non-white” it fully reflects the cultural and ethnic diversity of the City of London. LSBU offers a wide array of course options, from business management to engineering or science. Study abroad students at LSBU study alongside degree seeking students for a fully integrated experience.

Curriculum

LSBU is a comprehensive university providing a broad range of offerings across business, social sciences and the humanities. Currently LSBU comprises the following seven schools: Arts and Creative Industries; Applied Sciences; Built Environment and Architecture; Business; Health and Social Care; and Law and Social Sciences. The largest of these, based on student enrollment are Health and Social Care (34%) and Business (20%).

Credits are based on the CATS system (Credit Accumulation and Transfer Scheme) which is used by several British universities. Based on the conversion scale provided by LSBU, and used predominantly by their US partners, 5 CATS credits equal 1 US semester credit, with most classes offered by LSBU carrying 3 or 4 US semester credits. One class entitled London: City of Change (4 US credits), is mandatory and focuses on the history and culture of London. The class combines a classroom component with excursions to various sites around the city including the Globe Theater, Tate Gallery, amongst others. Typically students will take 3-4 classes, though a minimum of 60 CATS credits will be required for full-time status.

Internship opportunity

The program with LSBU offers Pacific students an exciting opportunity to participate in an internship during their study abroad program. This option, which is offered at no extra cost due to a prior arrangement between LSBU and Anglo Educational Services (AES), allows students to earn internship credits for up to 20 hours of work weekly in a wide range of fields including business, government and politics, sports management, travel and tourism, fine arts management, and theater. Upon arrival in London, a comprehensive orientation covering the internship specifically will cover topics ranging from the interview to dress and norms in the English work place. There will also be an academic component in the form of a class entitled Learning Through Internships.  Students attend a 90-minute class once a week as well and are required to keep a journal and complete any additional course work.

Housing and Meals

Students will be housed in one of two modern self-catering residence halls within close proximity to the LSBU campus: the Dante Road complex, located a 10-minute walk from campus, has 414 non-smoking single-occupancy rooms, located in apartments of 4-6 bedrooms each, with shared bathroom and kitchen facilities; McLaren House, with just over 600 non-smoking rooms for first year undergraduate and returning students, is located just 200 yards from the main campus. All rooms are single occupancy and are in located in eight-bedroom apartments with a shared communal kitchen/dining area. The vast majority of bedrooms have their own bathrooms.  No meal plan is included in this program.
