What is your specialty as a tutor? What topic, problem, subject, or process do you most enjoy helping students to learn?
In general, I like helping students in whatever way that I can. I don't have a specific topic, problem, subject, or process that I most enjoy when helping students learn.
Which of the CLASS 5 Keys – Respect, Inclusion, Growth, Support, and Pizzazz - resonates with you the most and how do you put it into practice in your work as a tutor?
I think Pizzazz resonates with me the most. Every single one of the 5 Keys play an important role in the work of a CLASS Peer Tutor, but I believe it is important for each tutor to have their own Pizzazz. I enjoy trying to make students laugh, as I find it makes a more comfortable environment, and an environment better suited for learning.
What is your best advice for students on how to get the most out of their academic experience in college?
Be present. Often times students are physically present in a course for the whole duration of the class period. However, it is being mentally present that cannot be missed. Even if a student may not have fully understood a concept, it is much easier to try and work around their current understanding than not have an understanding if they, say, were not present for the whole class period.
Give us a movie quotation, song lyric, or line from a book that will motivate us in our learning.
"The past is history. The future is a mystery. Today is a gift, and that's why they call it the present."
