Pacific University's Center for Gender Equity is excited to celebrate National Coming Out Day!

Coming Out is an important rite of passage for many LGBTQIA+ people, and it is an on-going process. As long as there continues be misinformation, negative stereotypes, discrimination, and violence against LGBTQIA+ populations, coming out remains vital in our fight for civil liberties. Sharing our authentic selves also creates connection and community, lets others know they are not alone, and provides an opportunity for allies to be supportive. We also honor that it is not always safe for people to come out - especially young people financially dependent on their caregivers.

This list hopes to both serve as a reminder for students that there are many LGBTQIA+ and allied staff and faculty on campus to support them and that there is strength in numbers.

Q Center

The mission of Q Center is to increase the visibility of and foster connection within metropolitan Portland’s Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Questioning (LGBTQ) community. The center builds public awareness and support, and celebrates LGBTQ diversity through art, culture, and programming. Additionally, the Q Center has a Resources Search Tool and Hotline that can connect folks with hundreds of other resources and services.

PQ Monthly

A monthly LGBTQ newspaper publication and website covering local Portland LGBTQ news and events, it's distributed free in newspaper racks around town, and can also be found in a rack at the QRC main entryway.

Cascade AIDS Project/Prism Health Center

Prism Health, a primary care health center, is part of CAP’s expanding mission to serve the broader LGBTQ+ community and will help remove barriers and improve access to health care for all LGBTQ+ individuals. Founded in 1983, Cascade AIDS Project is the oldest and largest community-based provider of HIV services, housing, education and advocacy in Oregon and Southwest Washington. Cascade AIDS Project helps people put their lives back together; to secure housing, find essential medical care and deal with the countless issues that make the difference between giving up or getting up and going on.

Rose City Resource

The Rose City Resource is a publication of Street Roots and is the most comprehensive, updated list of services for people experiencing homelessness and poverty in Multnomah, Washington, and Clackamas counties.

Outside In

Outside In's mission is to help homeless youth and other marginalized people move toward improved health and self-sufficiency. In addition to providing LGBTQ-affirming health services and housing resources, Outside In hosts queer youth groups and offers two programs specific to the needs of trans folks.

  • Their Trans Clinic (transclinic@outsidein.org) is an appointment-based program which provides hormone therapy to trans, genderqueer, and gender non-conforming individuals (there is generally a 3-6 month wait for new patients).
  • Their ID Project (idproject@outsidein.org) is a program which helps trans and gender non-conforming folks change their legal identification through the courts or at the DMV.

Sexual Minority Resource Center (SMYRC)

The goal of SMYRC is to create safety and support for LGBTQ youth in Oregon through youth empowerment, community building and education. In addition to their drop in center offering a variety of groups and health services, SMYRC also provides free mental health counseling to youth 23 and under. Services include assessment, individual treatment, groups, couples, and family therapy. SMYRC is now partnered with the Q Center to provide comprehensive services for the LGBTQ Community.

Basic Rights Oregon

Basic Rights Oregon is a political action committee with the goal of ending discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity. They initiate and champion legislation, and monitor the legislative process with the help of one of Oregon's most respected lobbyists. They also recruit, educate, endorse, and support candidates, working closely with them once they are elected.

Northwest Rainbow Alliance of the Deaf

Northwest Rainbow Alliance of the Deaf in a nonprofit organization for, with, and about Deaf, Deaf-Blind, & HH gay, lesbian, bisexual, queer, and transgender people. NWRAD represents members from Vancouver BC, Washington and Oregon.

Oregon Reminders

Oregon Reminders is a great resource for people would like to get reminders about HIV/STI testing, taking their medications or refilling up on their prescription; the whole process is easily customized and can either be set up to remind via text or email.

Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG), Portland Chapter

Through support, education, and advocacy, PFLAG unites the voices of parents, family members, straight allies, and GLBT people together to advance fairness, justice, and equality in local communities around the country. PFLAG believes that when straight people come to the defense of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender (GLBT) family members and friends, equality for all will finally be achieved.

"The Oregon Safe Schools and Communities Coalition (OSSCC) seeks to create safe schools and communities where every family can belong, every educator can teach, and every child can learn regardless of actual or perceived sexual orientation or gender identity. The OSSCC believes that all youth deserve to feel safe and welcome in our schools and communities."

Bi Brigade

Bi Brigade is a local community group for bisexual, pansexual, fluid, and similar orientations and their allies. They are a volunteer-based, democratic, radically inclusive group that organizes face-to-face activities around Portland.

The Northwest Network

The Northwest Network provides support and advocacy for LBGT folks of all genders who are surviving abuse. They work to increases the communities' ability to support the self-determination and safety of bisexual, transgendered, lesbian, and gay survivors of abuse through education, organizing and advocacy. They see themselves within a broad liberation movement dedicated to social and economic justice, equality and respect for all people and the creation of loving, inclusive and accountable communities.
