Mahtem Shiferraw is a poet and visual artist form Ethiopia and Eritrea. Her first full-length collection, Fuchsia, and her chapbook, Behind Walls and Glass, were published in 2016. Her second collection, Your Body Is War, is forthcoming from the University of Nebraska Press in 2019. Her work has been published in various literary magazines including Poets.org, Callaloo, The 2River View, Prairie Schooner, Diverse Voices Quarterly, Numero Cinq, Barrow Street Journal, At Length, World Literature Today, Chaos Hermeneutics Journal, and elsewhere.
She is the recipient of the Sillerman Prize for African Poets. She is the founder of Anaphora Literary Arts, a non-profit organization working to advance the works of writers and artists of color; co-founder of the Ethiopian Artist Collective, and editor of black lioness press, an imprint of Tsehai Publishers. She has served as the managing editor of Atlas and Alice Literary Magazine, and the founding editor for The Bleeding Lion: A Journal of Arts and Letters among many others. Mahtem served as a jury member for the prestigious Neustadt International Prize for Literature, and the Brunel International African Poetry Prize. Her poems have been included in the anthologies Coiled Serpent: Poets Arising from the Cultural Quakes and Shifts of Los Angeles and Leimert Park Voices Anthology. In 2018, she was awarded the Imani Prize for Artistic Excellence.
