Charlotte Basch '14, Anthropology-Sociology, Earns Udall Scholarship

For the second consecutive year, anthropology-sociology major Charlotte Basch ’14 has been named a Udall Scholar, one of just 50 students nationwide in 2013 to receive the honor.

Basch is a junior from Seaside who is also minoring in Indigenous Studies, which she worked with faculty members and administrators to establish last fall.

The Udall Scholarship recognizes students on the basis of commitment to careers in the environment, healthcare or tribal public policy; leadership potential; and academic achievement.

Each scholarship provides up to $5,000 for the scholar’s junior or senior year of college. Scholars also are invited to Tucson, Ariz., for a week in August to receive their awards and meet policymakers and community leaders in environmental fields, tribal healthcare and governance.

Basch belongs to the Clatsop-Nehalem Confederated Tribes, and is a council member and Canoe Family captain for the Clatsop-Nehalem located in northwest Oregon.

She is passionate about working towards her tribe's federal recognition as well as for the rights of indigenous people throughout the world.

The traditional culture of the northwest has always held an important place in her life, and Basch hopes to continue serving indigenous people on the local, national and international stage.
