Dr. Andy Weyer coauthors review article on molecular sensor of cold temperatures

Dr. Andy Weyer, PT, DPT, PhD, recently published a review article on the molecular sensor of cold temperatures along with Dr. Sonya Lehto, a Senior Scientist at the pharmaceutical company Amgen. As a result of this interdisciplinary collaboration, Weyer and Lehto reviewed the Transient Receptor Potential Melastatin 8 (TRPM8) ion channel and its paradoxical roles in both promoting pain due to cold temperatures and inhibiting pain due to cold temperatures. Although there are currently no clinical trials investigating drugs that target TRPM8, it is an ongoing focus of biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies such as Amgen. Considering the use of cold temperatures as a modality in the clinic, this ion channel is also of high relevance to physical therapists.
