Register now for the summer session of the Pacific University MFA Mapmakers Alumni Institute, a new initiative to continue our engagement and support of Mapmakers Scholars who have graduated from the program, to help bring their work to the world. Part of the MFA's June residency, this event is free and open to the public. Registration required.

June's event is organized by Mapmaker alumna Catherine-Esther Cowie MFA '20.

Beyond Ekphrastic: From integrating photographs into the poem to the implicit ways poetry informs the creation of a visual art piece, join poets Diana Khoi Nguyen, Allison Moore MFA '20, Adrienne Christian MFA '11 and Catherine-Esther Cowie MFA '20 as they discuss how they work with text and the visual. How do the two mediums overlap and intersect? What meaning does the visual bring forward that language fails to articulate and/or fully express?

The Mapmakers Scholarship fund is named after Mapmaker, an early collection of poems by MFA faculty member Kwame Dawes. Dawes has been a leader in the program’s mission to diversify the writers we serve and create equity. In helping us name the scholarship, he said, “The title characterizes what I think of myself as both a writer and as an advocate for the work of others and as someone who tries to open new territories for those who have not had access.” First offered in January 2018, this scholarship is awarded to exceptional students of color.
