The Sound of Victory: Learning to Listen to Sports
Please come along for an interactive presentation exploring the collision of music, sound, and sport with Dr. Courtney M. Cox (University of Oregon), Dr. Amira Rose Davis (University of Texas), and Dr. Perry B. Johnson (University of Southern California).
With turntables in tow, these scholars will offer a live mixtape performance that expands across genres and league.
Dr. Courtney M. Cox is an associate professor in the Department of Indigenous, Race, and Ethnic Studies at the University of Oregon. She is the author of Double Crossover: Gender, Media, and Politics in Global Basketball (University of Illinois Press 2025) and co-director of The Sound of Victory, a multi-platform project located at the intersection of music, sound, and sport as well as a book, The Sound of Victory: Music, Sport, and Society (New York University Press 2026).
Dr. Amira Rose Davis is an assistant professor of African and African Diaspora Studies at the University of Texas in Austin. Her research explores athlete activism, race, and sports politics. She is co-author of Athlete and Activist: 28 Sports Stars Who Changed the Game (University of Illinois Press 2026) and cohost of the feminist sports podcast Burn It All Down.
Dr. Perry B. Johnson is a music scholar, cultural historian, and producer. She is the co-director of The Sound of Victory, an interdisciplinary initiative dedicated to exploring the historic relationship between music, sound, and sport, and cohost of the PBS documentary series Outside the Lyrics. Johnson teaches in the Annenberg School of Communication at the University of Southern California.
