Compass Program

Paragraphs

Compass is a leadership program for graduate and undergraduate health-professions students looking for opportunities to get involved in projects and events. You will take the lead on OHWI-supported activities and gain valuable experience in building community and practicing the skills vital to your career goals.

Spring Term Mentor Program

  • Mentors are grad students of any health profession who offer leadership and guidance to mentees, who are undergrads pursuing their path into healthcare. These mentor-mentee groups will be interprofessional and elaborate on the need for openness and adaptability in pursuing careers.
  • There is one mandatory virtual training video for mentors and one for mentees.

Structure of the Mentor Program

  • Attend lectures: Mentor groups are encouraged to attend a monthly virtual 90-minute lecture or speaker panel. The lectures serve as an opportunity for mentor groups to think of discussion topics for your meetings, make professional connections, and hear advice and learn lessons about healthcare careers from practicing professionals in diverse fields.
  • Advice on career materials: Mentees are encouraged to put together their resume, statement of intent (for a job or grad program), and a job shadow plan to elicit feedback from their mentor.
  • Meet monthly as a mentor group: Mentors and Mentees must meet together every month, either in person or over zoom. Lectures and the career packet are meant to offer a purpose to get you together and ideas about common needs and topics of discussion. The true goal of the mentor program is connection and fellowship while on a long and difficult education and career path. As long as both of you are connecting, the discussion topics can be whatever you need most from your mentor and community!
