Join ALAS for Weekly Pre-Orientation Summer Events

The Association of Latinx and Ally Students, formerly known as the Hispanic Heritage Student Association, has been hard at work this summer creating a series of virtual programming. The goal of these events is to get a head start on welcoming incoming students, making current students aware of the group's new executive team, new goals, and creating a safe space for our little “home away from home.” The ALAS Pre-Orientation Summer Events will will continue on Saturdays throughl Aug. 22. They are hosted via Zoom from 3 – 4 p.m. PST.

Saturday, Aug. 8 ALAS will be hosting a game hour. ALAS events are open to all students, faculty, and staff. For the first half of the event the team will host Jackbox Games, a variety game pack similar to Kahoot, which can be played from a cell phone or computer. For the second half the team will host Pictionary via a website called Skribbl.io. This game server is very virtual-friendly and will make for a lot of fun. We hope to see as many people as possible!

Saturday, Aug. 15 ALAS is collaborating with Dr. Shirley Ley, a license psychologist from Pacific. She will guide the attendees through a mindfulness and emotional healing practice, creating a safe space for people to share any mental difficulties they have been going through. The ALAS executive team feels this session is highly beneficial, not just because of the burden of the pandemic, but to give incoming students a space to share their worries as they prepare to enter a new phase of their lives.

To close the programming out, Saturday, Aug. 22, the team will be hosting a get-ready-for-school session. Upperclassmen will share tips and tricks to use while starting classes, give advice on any worries students might have, and communicate how ALAS gatherings will change for the new semester. Though this session is targeted toward incoming freshmen, all students and staff are invited if they have anything to share.

If you or anyone else you know may be interested, feel free to RSVP using this link. The Zoom meeting invitation is sent out to those on our listserv, which is easy to get onto with your Pacific email. We hope to see you soon!
