Sabrina Spurlock '20 Curates Performance Art Piece by Kayla Wiley ’17

Sabrina Spurlock '20 curated the performance art piece Here's My Mom. She's Dead, created by Portland artist Wiley, also known as Kayla Wiley ’17. Spurlcock is a queer, contemporary artist particularly interested in installation and digital art.

The “durational” performance consisted of Wiley viewing over 40 VHS tapes of her mother, Lorrie, for the first time since she was killed by a drunk driver in 2001. The approximately eight-hour performance premiered virtually on Nov. 20, 2021 on what would have been Lorrie Wiley's 53rd birthday. Viewers were encouraged to interact by chatting or commenting.
